Where state Sen. Jim Dabakis was viewed as a willing watchdog with little experience to inform his bark, the Salt Lake City Council decided that Alex Cragun checks both boxes. Cragun received the council’s unanimous approval Tuesday to represent the city on the Utah Transit Authority’s board of trustees — after about four years of appealing to that group to more seriously consider their customers. Cragun traces his advocacy to a single night. Having missed the last bus home, he saw an older woma... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

At a yellow kiosk on Gallivan Plaza, visitors scrawled their favorite Utah memories on postcards and stuck them to a large map of Utah. “It’s kind of sad,” one visitor said as he completed his card and added it to the “Letter to Utah” on Tuesday night at the final annual Outsiders Ball in Salt Lake City before the Outdoor Retail convention relocates to Denver after more than 20 years in Utah. The twice-yearly trade show has brought thousands of patrons, peddlers and pedallers to Salt Lake City’... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

Two people died and a girl was seriously injured in a head-on collision near the eastern Utah town of Ioka. The Utah Highway Patrol said 18-year-old Devin Kirk, of Heber City, was driving east on State Route 87 at 4:36 p.m. Sunday when his Chrysler drifted across the center line. It collided head-on with a Hyundai near mile marker 30. Both Kirk and a woman in the second car, Shauna Allen, 46, of Wales, died in the crash. A 12-year-old girl, also in the Hyundai, was transported to an area hospita... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

The mother of an autistic boy has filed a federal lawsuit alleging excessive force against Duchesne County, its sheriff and a sheriff’s sergeant after the boy was handcuffed and bruised during his arrest by the sergeant earlier this year. An internal review of the officer’s conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, however, found that the sergeant acted appropriately during the interaction, except for mistakenly switching off his body camera. On April 14, the 13-year-old boy — wearing goggles, whic... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

Most of Utah, with the exception of the northern Wasatch Front, was under a Flash Flood Watch through Tuesday night. The thunderstorms and rain clouds hovering over the state were the result of monsoonal moisture trapped between a upper-atmospheric, southwesterly flow out of Northern California and another ridge of air from the southern High Plains. From eastern Utah’s Duchesne and Uintah counties south to Arizona border, west through southern Utah to the Nevada state line, and then north to Uta... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

Utah is poised to ask the Trump administration’s approval for its plan to extend Medicaid coverage to about 6,000 of the state’s neediest childless adults, many of them chronically homeless or in need of mental health or drug addiction treatment. State health department officials say they are a week away from submitting the plan, after receiving more than 230 public comments on details of their Medicaid expansion proposal. This is Utah’s second attempt to expand health coverage to this populatio... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

Editor’s note • In this regular series, The Salt Lake Tribune explores the once-favorite places of Utahns, from restaurants to recreation to retail. — For a vast swath of western Salt Lake County a half century ago, the only nearby place to see movies in an indoor cinema was at the vast-itself Plaza Theatre in Kearns. It was built in 1964 with 950 seats, a wide screen and a full stage — to also allow live performances — and advertised itself as Utah’s third largest. Before it was built, the onl... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is coming to Utah to campaign with former state Rep. Chris Herrod, who is vying for the seat recently vacated by Jason Chaffetz. Herrod had supported Cruz during the senator’s 2016 presidential run, according to Herrod’s campaign. Now the senator from Texas is supporting Herrod in his campaign for the 3rd Congressional District seat. Last week, Cruz had tentatively planned a Utah rally to stump for Herrod. That visit is now scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at 4205 Chapel... <iframe src="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/garss.csp" height="1" width="1" > </frame>
